Summer Street Studio
Piano & Violin Lessons

- online or in Adams, MA -

About

Teacher:
Melanie Maz has been teaching piano and violin to students for over 20 years. She taught piano and violin full-time in the Boston area through her private studio and at the New School of Music, the Belmont Saturday Morning Music School, Boston Collegiate Charter School, Hill House, Cambridge Community Schools, and Suzuki School of Music. She performed locally with the Newton Symphony, Longwood Symphony, Serenata Chamber Musicians, the Brahms Society Orchestra, New England Philharmonic, and Boston Neo-politan Orchestra. In addition to being a musician, Melanie is also an established artist (you can view her music themed art at www.maz-art.com).  In 2023, Melanie moved to the Berkshires with her partner, Chad, and their cat, and is now establishing her teaching studio in Adams, MA.

Lessons/Students:
Students ages 7 - adult may enroll in lessons (younger children may enroll on a case by case basis). Parents do not attend lessons with their children but will be informed weekly of progress and practice goals.  Students can take lessons once or twice per week (2 lessons a week are recommended for students who aren't  able to practice regularly on their own).

Lesson Days/Times:
Generally, lesson slots are available weekdays from noon-7pm (sorry, no weekend lessons). Please contact the studio about current availability.

Locations:
Melanie offers online lessons and travels to homes within Adams, MA by foot and bike. She also offers a limited number of lesson slots at her Summer St studio (please note: there is a friendly cat in residence, so if you're allergic, please opt for in-home or online lessons).

Summer/School Vacation Lessons:
Lessons are offered during the Summer and school vacation weeks. While weekly lessons are strongly recommended, students can opt for lessons sporadically throughout the Summer months.

Instruments:
Students will need to have their own instrument to practice on. Violins come in different sizes and children will need bigger sizes as they grow, so renting (rather than buying) is strongly recommended. For piano students, having a basic keyboard (at least 61 keys) is fine. Weighted keys are preferred, but not required, for a beginner.

Books:
Beginners will purchase and use Faber& Faber and/or Bastien method books. However, if you are  continuing student  we can work with whatever books/sheet music you currently use. All students need to bring their books/sheet music plus a notebook (for writing assignments in) to every lesson.

Scheduling Lessons/Payment:
Lessons are scheduled month to month (students pay for all lessons in the upcoming month prior to their first lesson of that month), but new students are welcome to enroll mid month. Lessons are reserved once payment is processed.
